2nd Tenure at KSU

Before Raymond became the current president of Kentucky State University, Mary Evan Sias, the current president. Mary had set her retirement to happen in June. When she did retire, KSU hired an interim president to fill in her role until they found a suitable replacement. That interim president was Raymond M. Burse. A while into his president temporary job he decided to actual try and be the permanent president of the university. The board of people who select the president decided he would be the good fit as president, and voted him in. When people heard, he would be the new permanent president he receives positive feedback from the students and faculty.



As president, he started off with a huge splash that affected the employees of the university. He decided to cut his salary short by $90,000 to put that money into the faculty that work about $7 hour. He believes that $7 an hour was not enough money to live off of, so the money that was cut from his salary was able to raise those employees wages to $10 an hour. Which he believe was enough to live off.

The Time Inbetween First Tenure and Second Tenure at KSU

Raymond has been very involved with is community throughout his career. He serves on varies committees that are very helpful for the improvement of Kentucky as a state. Some of the committees that he use to and currently serve on are the, "Burse was a member on the boards of Centre College and Alabama A&M University. His other commitments have included serving on the boards of the Louisville branch of the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank, the Frankfort/Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and the State YMCA of Kentucky. He served as chair of the Louisville Free Public Library Advisory Commission, chair of the Appeals Committee of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and vice chair of the Louisville Community Foundation Board of Directors. He also served with the Louisville Economic Development Corporation, the NCAA Council and the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage. Currently he serves on the Board of Governors of the Center for Creative Leadership.(Hamption University Raymond M. Burse).

President of the Kentucky State University from 1982-1989



Raymond became the Kentucky State University's president in 1982. As president, he was known for being somewhat harsh when he made decisions, but his decisions produce results. During his tenure has President Raymond increase KSU's academic standards, increase capital improvement by $60 million, and he increase finances. He ended his tenure in 1989 due to constants problems with faculty that cause an increase in turnover rate.

Academic Life of Raymond

Raymond M. Burse is a man with many rewards and accomplishments. From playing sports to learning degrees in different fields to holding executive positions in many different companies and organizations.


Raymond was born in 1951. He is the son of Lena Belle Burse and Joe Burse. He lived in the city Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Academic, athletic, and community serves are things that Raymond took seriously throughout his life since he has a long and good record with those things. He turns down a scholarship to play football. Instead, he chose to major in chemistry and math at Centre College. While, at Centre, Raymond was apart of the school's Black Student Union (which he founded), he was also a part of the Student Government, and he was the student adviser to the president of the university. Before graduating in 1973, he earn rewards for running in track & field and playing football. After graduating, he earned a scholarship, letting him be able to attend the University of Oxford where he major in organic chemistry. While at Oxford Raymond also participated in rugby, basketball, track, and crew. He graduated from the University of Oxford in 1975. When he return the states, he attended Harvard Law School, where he graduated in 1978.
